Artist Sunil Padwal’s home at Lower Parel is an ode to minimalism. White interiors throughout the home make the space seem bigger than it really is. “I wanted my home to be clutter-free and become my cocoon of serenity and peace. It’s a great feeling to leave behind the chaotic world when I enter this white temple,” says Sunil. But what is noteworthy is that every white cabinet that so graciously blends in with the decor is actually a concealed space-saving unit that houses every knick-knack may be necessary to run a household that comprises Sunil, wife Tanuja (interior accessories designer) and their five-and-a-half-year old son Satt who inhabit the 1,500 sq ft apartment.

Stark white walls, bleached flooring, white accessories in the form of single flower slim line vases, white dining table set, white cabinets which seem as if they are an extension of the walls impart a sense of infinite space. In sharp contrast is a black leather sofa and veneer centre table that makes a stunning impact. A few definitive pieces such as a pink hanging lamp designed by Tanuja and a red table lamp break the white monochrome interiors adding some colour.

What’s also worth mentioning is the fact that the house looks completely different at night. On a daily basis, the Padwals use regular incandescent lighting whereas when entertaining red uplighters, accent lighting and LEDs ensure that the space turns into nothing less than a nightclub. Dimmers set the tone and mood for a party.

The modest master bedroom has a double bed bathed in white covers with a few colourful cushions to dress it up — adding an element of colour. “We chose white because it not only doubles up the space but also allows us to play with the design,” says Sunil about his wife’s choice while designing the house.

The artist is passionate about watches and shoes and has quite a tidy collection of footwear lining the cabinets in his passageway.
Squarish, bold and high on design watches catch his fancy. “I’m not into ornate designed watches with stones or embellishments.

What I go for are watches that have a striking design element. My purchase is focused on personal satisfaction rather than on acquiring a brand name,” says the artist, summing up the philosophy of his home too.
