For someone who believes each medium has its own ego, artist Shubha Gokhale loves experimenting with beads and other materials to create unique arty jewellery.

“Like painting, jewellery for me is a play of colour, forms and texture,” she says. “In painting I often paint on acrylic sheets and with a background of textile collage or calligraphy, I do the same technique for my hand painted pendants, which I set in silver. I call it an extension of my creativity.”

Even the motifs she uses are parallel to her art works. “On the pendants I have painted puppets, Nayika, lotuses and calligraphy. The accidental effects in enamelling are fascinating. I think each medium has its own ego. I’ve done a workshop in enamelling on silver and copper and am looking forward to using it in my jewellery.”
