Searching for the whiff of romance and humour through his paintings, Devajyoti Ray delves into the pseudo-realistic world. His take on the changing political scenario and ideologies on canvas will be showcased in an exhibition — Tic, Antic and Romantic.

When asked how he infuses his art with elements of humour and romance, Ray says, "It is more of a pun at the distorted version of reality. The idea of romance has changed over ages with change in gender roles. Nowadays, no woman expects her man to fight a duel over her. In fact, babysitting one’s kids is the sign of a considerate man." When it comes to describing his body of work, Ray says it is a political statement with a good dose of humour.

Ray is one of the few Indian artists who delves into the world of pseudo realism and when asked to describe what it means to him, he quips, "It is the juxtaposition of abstract elements to give it a realistic feel. In isolation we cannot think of a green face or a geometrical shape conveying any meaning. But when brought together to follow a certain pattern, it gives a sense of movement and fluidity to the painting." Asked why the faces he paints are featureless, he states that this is a minimalistic style he has adopted. It gives the viewer more scope to discover and make their own inference rather than get caught up in the details.

He juggles his passion for art while being a senior officer at the narcotics department of the Indian government. "My art gives me the scope to unwind and gives me the freedom to explore a different me, outside the confines of my office," Ray says with his usual nonchalance while having exhibited his paintings across major destinations around the world.

When and where: January 29 onwards, Nehru Centre
