Maintaining radiant and youthful skin is top on the list for most women. With an endless number of brands offering anti-ageing creams, it  can be confusing as to when to start using them and which ones. While some believe getting a headstart is better to prevent wrinkles and fine lines, others feel you should wait for the signs. Research suggests that everyone ages differently — based upon the level of stress, the amount of water and healthy foods consumed, genetics and lifestyle choices.

RIGHT SKIN CARE ROUTINE

Aakriti Kochar, Beauty & Make-up Expert, Oriflame India feels the correct age to start using anti-ageing products is 30 plus. “However, there is no particular age group to start taking precautions and good care. The early 20s is the time to take a few necessary steps like wearing a sunscreen and to avoid smoking.

As one gets an excellent cell turnover in their early 20s, one need not stress about ageing and instead follow a good skin care regime along with a healthy diet,” she says. When looking for a product, choose those with ingredients such as Retinol, Kinetin, Hydroxyacids, tea extracts, copper peptides, coenzyme Q10. They all serve to provide extra nourishment and moisture that ageing skin needs. Using a cream with soy as its main ingredient like the one by Oriflame, acts on skin genes and boost collagen production for a firmer skin appearance.

SKIN HAS SPECIFIC NEEDS

One can feel for the first time the signs of ageing in the 30s, when the skin around the eyes, mouth and neck area starts changing, says Dr Sadhana Deshmukh, Leading Dermatologist  Cosmetologist and Trichologist, Forever Young Clinic. “Your skin has specific needs once you hit 30 and in order to make sure it keeps looking great till your 60s and 70s, you need to start using certain products now. More water is lost which leads to drying and decreases the skin’s natural protection barrier. Along with daily sunscreen, your skin needs extra moisture.

Use an AHA peel, preferably one with glycolic acid, to buff away dull skin and restore a healthy glow. A night cream or serum that contains retinol, a form of vitamin A complex that is an antioxidant, means it can undo damage like wrinkles caused by free radicals,” she says. Ensure that your skin glows through your twenties. A deep cleansing and exfoliating treatment can be done every five weeks to protect and prevent premature ageing.

MOISTURISE AND TONE
Indian women have much thicker skin than their western counterparts says Dr Blossom Kocchar, Chairperson, Blossom Kochhar Beauty Products Pvt Ltd. “The sun, pollution, smoking, excessive drinking are damaging to the skin. And this damage accumulates below the skin as free radicals generated by the above damaged collagen and elastin fibers that weaken the skin structure. It’s better to start using anti-ageing creams before you start noticing signs of wrinkles in your 30s.

You should also incorporate a toner that has Vitamin C to renew the skin and a high quality moisturiser.” It is also very important to select a product which has the best and most suitable components for your skin.
