Whether your hair is curly or straight, wavy or messy, pigtails are for you. The hairstyle once associated with young school-going girls is getting a do over with models at the international fashion weeks Spring/Summer 2016 sporting this look. While Miu Miu had their models flaunt a headpiece and messy pigtails on each side, Marni went for two sleek ponys, while Mara Hoffman chose the braided route. The style is also being adopted by prominent faces like Alexa Chung who rocked the braided style.

Accessorise your style
Pigtails are often relegated to the "little girl's hairstyle" category, but there are ways to make them look and feel decidedly more grown-up, says make-up and hair styling expert Priya Kapur. "With a unique braiding style, a cool texture, or a purposefully messy vibe, pigtails can suddenly be chic. The style is definitely making a comeback. Taking inspiration from the runway, there are lots of variations available to you. Accessorising pigtails either sleeked back, mid-parted and straight or loose and messy is the key to wearing this at formal events.
Over the past year, hair jewellery designers have introduced a huge range of ponytail specific accessories from Austriancrystal studded elastic bands to clip-on string beads and jewelled side combs. With the incredible selection of options from beaded scrunchies to faux fur and jewelled babbles, let your imagination run wild," adds Priya.

Play with hair texture
Aditi Vyas, Style Director, BBLUNT says the best way to sport a pigtail as an adult is to work it with a different placement. "Wear it textured, if not messy. Make sure it's not too clean and tight as then it looks a bit school-girlish. For the placement, it can be to one side or to make it a bit edgy, you can make a mohawk braid through the center and open it out by pinching the loops in each braid and tugging on it so that it gets fullness.
For wavy and curly hair, it's easier as the hair has a lot of texture naturally, loose pigtails go really well for wavy and curly hair. For straighter hair, a fishtail can be worked with as the braid itself has a lot of texture. Crimp the hair before braiding it to give extra fullness for fine, straight hair. Make use of a crimper to give fullness and intricate texture to your style," explains Aditi.

Go classic or modern
What we're doing now is reinventing the traditional ways in which pigtails were done, says Elton Steve Vessoaker, creative director, Nalini of Nalini & Yasmin salon. "Having said that wearing them in a classic way is also truly beautiful. The trick is to choose the occassion correctly and match it with wardrobe and make-up. A more conservative style of braiding pigtails would work for a traditional wedding look. Use a good quality serum to add shine and smoothness," he says.
