Pregnancy can be a special experience for a woman but also an exhausting period and a little pampering can go a long way. But before heading to your neighbourhood salon or spa there are a few things women need to keep in mind. Not all beauty treatments are safe for expectant mothers.

CHOOSE TREATMENTS WISELY
Dr Shivani Sachdev Gour, Director of SCI Healthcare says there are certain precautions that a pregnant woman needs to take. “Permanent processes like dyes and bleaches are harmful as they contain ammonia, that has strong fumes which when breathed in can affect the growing baby. This is true of hair straightening and keratin processes too.

Similarly, eyelash growing treatments do not have FDA clearance,” she says. However, one need not forgo all beauty products altogether. “Pure henna is the safest alternative to hair dye. Also it’s preferable to highlight the hair instead of dyeing it. Vegetable dyes may be a good alternative, but always check the packet for ingredients,” she adds.

AVOID INFECTIONS
The first trimester of pregnancy is crucial as this is the time when the organs of the foetus are developing. Any harmful chemicals that can get into the blood can cause developmental defects says Dr Rickson Pereira, consulting dermatologist, Dr Minal’s Dermatherapie Centre. “Aside from hair treatments, pregnant women should avoid hair removal creams as they contain higher concentrations of thioglycollate, manicures and pedicures because any infection in the skin carries the risk of bacteria spreading into the bloodstream and procedures such as botox, fillers and mesotherapy.” Steam or sauna/hot tubs can cause dehydration and overheating. “Facials and massages are safe in pregnancy. However, an improperly or vigorously done body massage can induce abortion,” he adds.

NATURAL OPTIONS
Check the suitability of your normal beauty products during pregnancy, advises Kanchan Punjani, top aesthetician, Jean-Claude Biguine Salon & Spa, Khar. “Opt for organic shampoos, lotions, body washes and cosmetics. If you’re unsure about your products, consult your obstetrician. While facials are fine, harsh treatment like Microdermabrasion and any kind of chemical peels is not advisable. Spas like ours have a special tailor-made 60-minute massage that eases stress and reduces the swelling of legs,” she says.
