Shorts, coming spring summer seem to be going incendiarily up. Designer Anthony Vaccarello’s party girls love their leather micro shorts with ultra-high hem. The Saint Laurent show hosted against the glimmering Eiffel Tower at the recently concluded Paris Fashion Week, saw a parade of mini shorts teamed with puffball one-shoulder feathery tops. At Dior too, Maria Grazia Chiuri radiated a gamine charm by sending out girls in pleated and tailored shorts showcased in a biker style. Giamba teamed a soft, floral printed top with a pair of denim cutoffs  and shorts also were a major story on the runways of Nina Ricci and Isabel Marant. Back home, Payal Singhal in her resort line paired a micro mini version with a long top, which had a high-low hemline. Surily Goel’s itsy-bitsy shorts and boho taselled waistcoats have been seen doing the rounds on the party circles seen on the likes of Ujjwala Raut.

These casual separates range from leather and silk variety to sportified cycling shorts. While Chloé presented them in day wear format, Isabel Marant clubbed a pair of metallic blouses with cropped trousers and Paco Rabanne sent out a pair in hot pants style. OffWhite paired a clean cut number with a double breasted blazer.  Guess it’s time to work on the legs at the gym to rock these staples.

Balance the look

Designer Surily Goel opines that one has to be skinny and have an amazing height. “Team the shorts with a structured blazer or a cotton jacket or opt for an off-shoulder top and pair it with a bomber jacket or a waistcoat. Avoid going skinny or too tight as it may not look too appealing. Balance the look with a soft voluminous top or a tailored blazer.”

Basic summer staple

Shorts, over a period of time, have emerged as the ultimate basic summer staple and this time, they have come back in a glamazon format — seen in sequinned, leather or metallic fabrics and they also help you make a successful day to night transition.

Designer Aniket Satam suggests, “Team a basic white tank with a pair of micro shorts or pair them with a pair of cropped denims or you can even club them with oversized distressed denims. For evening, team a pair with a basic pussy-bow blouse. Shorts are season neutral and a great investment piece as opposed to a sequinned mini dress. Also, a great budget buy.”

Go bold with brocade

Designer Payal Singhal believes that one needs to understand the tapestry of our country as micro shorts may come across as a bit too revealing. I feel one needs at least a 15 inch length minimum and they shouldn’t show your butt cheek. “One can Indianise the look by teaming them with an oversized top. Opt for a pair of cute white cotton shirt with a blouson top in Madras checks or in cotton linen. The denim shorts paired with a white shirt and T-shirt work well. A pair of brocade shorts is a cool idea for the festive season and we’ve shown them paired with an oversized top. For an evening out, team them with a big puff sleeved top and pumps.”

Can give a run to a traditonal pantsuit

Designer Ohaila Khan feels that they are capable of giving the traditional pant suit a run for its money if worn as short suits.

“They can also be teamed with capes or corsets. They can make an interesting case for fusion dressing at a poolside mehendi or destination wedding if teamed with a kurta or kaftan with high slits,” says Khan.
