Miuccia Prada in her Spring Summer 2017 outing teamed bralettes with buttoned-up shirts, which showed up again at Miu Miu, as bikini tops worn over dresses. The likes of Alexander Wang flirted with it in a wrap-around style while Alexander McQueen spiked it with artisanal studs. On the other hand, Altuzarra sweetened them with vibrant cherry prints and Victoria Beckham even propagated pairing them with tailored suits. The thinking women’s brand — Céline presented them in crochet knitted style. We ask designers how to work them in this sweltering heat....

Needs a kick-ass hot bod

Summer is here and the heat is killing. The bralette, which is a huge trend on the international fashion scene therefore seems to be an ideal piece of clothing to beat the Indian summer fashionably. Designer Maheka Mirpuri says, “It is a decadent little secret under whatever you decide to pop on top. The bralette is very sexy and gives a very summery vibe specially if it is in botanical prints or ruffles — a well toned body does great justice to this look. As many may not be comfortable wearing inner wear as outer wear because it shows a lot of skin, I would recommend to pair the bralette with  either a slouchy blazer or wear it under a white sheer shirt to play down the look so it’s not so in your face.Team a bralette with high-waist palazzos for a formal look, while for a casual day look pair it with a floral long skirt. When going for a vacation, try pairing a black bralette with a printed long skirt.”

She also envisions this look under a nice long summer off shoulder dress or with blousons with dropped down shoulders.

“The quintessential sari also looks extremely sensual when teamed with the bralette. A tasseled chiffon lightweight summer sari in lovely pastels or bright sunny hues would look very chic with a beaded ruffled bralette. Add waterfall earrings or an armband and complete this look — very resort and bohemian,” she adds.

Beat the summer heat

Pria Kataaria Puri opines that this summer essential spells youthfulness. “It can be worn like a camisole with a jacket or a top that can be thrown with shorts or jeans. Beat the summer heat by teaming it with a pair of high-waist palazzos, culottes or umbrella skirts. You can add a layer using a caplet jacket or scarf.  If you are open to experiment, pair the ruffled bralette with a printed georgette or chiffon sari. An ideal choice would be solid colours with slight bead work or embellishments at the edges,” she says.

Dress it up or down

Designer Anita Dongre says, “The ruffled bralet is a fun and casual garment, perfect for tropical summers. One can dress it up or dress it down, as the occasion demands. It can be worn with a pair of high-waist trousers with a broad waistband to brunch. For a more formal occasion, it can be paired with a high-waist pencil skirt.”
