Be it an antique Bohemian crystal or a classic Murano, they dangle decorously, adding style and sparkle your home. Chandeliers are drop-dead gorgeous lighting elements that anchor a room, giving it  old-world charm and grandeur. Historically, a crystal chandelier has been the epitome of luxurious grace. Glass, stained glass, semi-precious stones, quartz and metal (often precious metals such as gold and silver) are more contemporary. But the charm of an antique handcrafted chandelier remains unmatched. The labourious task of crafting each of these pieces is what
makes them a font of luxury.

Timeless elegance

Anemos

Meant to add oomph to your room, contemporary bespoke chandeliers offer the elegance of a timeless tradition—be it through bold silhouettes or hand-work metal finishes. “One can have crystal chandeliers for opulence and romance, industrial installations for quirkiness and character, colourful chandeliers for playfulness and so on,” says Rajkumar Jain of Anemos, a Mumbai-based décor store.

“Using the right material and theme, considering size, space availability and the desired amount of light, to create a piece that fits like a glove, is essential for a manufacturer,” says Rajiv Shah, Creative Head & CEO, Classic Luminaires Pvt. Ltd.

Understand your space
Before you buy a chandelier, look around your room (What are its dimensions? Where would you like to hang the chandelier?). “A common mistake most people make is not deciding whether the chandelier will be the main source of light in the room or more of an
ambience creator. Buy your chandelier based on your decision,”
advises Jain.

Old is new

Fusion Access

Shilpa Kalanjee Pastala, Managing Partner, Fusion Access, believes that modern designers are bringing back the designs, the look and feel of old-world chandeliers. “What was finicky and cluttered looking is now simplified and modern. Lighting installations are also in demand. They set the mood creating an ambience that expresses your personality,” she says.

Flaunt and flatter
Think of unusual spaces to hang your chandelier. Don’t limit yourself to just one chandelier in a very large room. Instead, opt for two slightly smaller fixtures. Use chandeliers in a variety of rooms. They look great in bedrooms, kitchens, bathrooms and even home offices. Experiment with styles. Sometimes a modern chandelier can look great in a room full of antiques, and a vintage piece can look terrific in a contemporary room. Install dimmer switches on every chandelier in your home. They’re terrific for creating ambience and offering a more flattering light.
