It is that time of the year to pull out your raincoats and umbrellas and just when you thought you are done with the sun, you realise that you need to get rid of that tan to show off that flawless skin.

Here are a few tips and tricks to make sure your sun tan leaves quicker that you thought it would. Cosmetologist, Dr Jamuna Pai says, “During summer, the sun is very intense and can seriously damage the skin. A lot of care has to be taken to protect not only the facial skin but also the body, hair and nails. Sun tanning occurs when the skin is over exposed to sunlight. Tanning is basically the skins protective mechanism, as the melanin pigment in the skin comes up when the UV rays come in contact with skin.

Many people willingly tan their skin through sunbathing. These people are unaware that excess exposure to sun may cause skin problems.”

Dr Meghna Dixit says tomato juice and orange juice could be used to get rid of tan on the face. “Tomato and orange are fresh and when squeezed on the skin, they get into the pores effectively cleansing the skin and reduce the melanin content as well. Raw mint is a good option too. Raw mint when rubbed on tanned skin gives a soothing effect and gets rid of the tan as well,” says Dixit.

The following are the ways to get rid of tans on different body parts:
Removing the tan from the feet: Feet are the most important but neglected part of the body. Most of us take a back seat in taking care of the feet as compared to the other body parts. Applying bleach to your feet for 10 minutes is the remedy to get rid of the tan. Hydrogen peroxide is the best product you can always keep not only to get rid of tan but, emergency cuts too.

Tan caused due to swimming: Tanning after swimming occurs because of the presence of chlorine in the pool water. Chlorine is known to dry the skin and also leads to oxidisation which in turn causes the skin to get darker. This often results in areas of dark patches on the skin, especially on the arms and legs which are not covered by swim wear. So the best option to prevent the tan is to apply a water proof sunscreen with an SPF 30 and above applied before entering the water. After coming out of the pool, the skin must be cleansed properly using soap and water. Also, apply moisturiser to prevent drying of the skin due to chlorine.

Get rid of that dry skin: During summers you tend to get sun burnt and also your skin tends to become dry due to overexposure to the sun. Fair people are at greater risk as their skin becomes red or brown and starts peeling due to the dryness. For this kind of severe tanning and dry skin the best remedy is to mix sugar, lemon juice and glycerin and scrub the area gently in circular motion.

A few home remedies too can be tried. For instance, you may keep cucumber juice or cotton wool pads soaked in rose water in the fridge to give a cooling effect on the face by dabbing it on the face from time to time. Apply sunscreen even when you are underneath the beach umbrella as the rays can reflect off the beach sand too. Go for sunscreens that contain additional moisturiser such as Vitamin E and Aloe Vera. Finally, keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
