Recently, Priyanka Chopra broke the style landscape with her OMG-inducing arrival on the airport in a printed noodle strappy slip dress layered with a denim jacket. She completed her look with a pair of reflector round sunnies and open-toe platforms. A few weeks ago, Deepika Padukone brought back the ’90s with her cool take on the decade’s reverse layering. Channelling her inner Rachel Green, she layered a white T-shirt with a nautical striped voluminous slip. Esha Gupta has often shown a penchant for slip camisoles while dressing for the airport. She usually likes to layer it either with a blazer or a knee-length jacket. Internationally, the likes of Elle Fanning and Gigi Hadid have rocked them with an infectious insouciance. Some like to pair them with a sable coat, others prefer teaming them with statement trench coats. We ask our style jury what’s their take on the slip dress being worn at the airport lounges....

Comfort is key

While travelling, one often values comfort over style so it’s not surprising to see our actresses opting for PJ twin set being worn with top coats or denim dungarees thrown over tees. Ileana D’Cruz opines that while travelling, comfort is crucial. “It depends — I got to be comfortable with what I’m wearing. I like to wear T-shirts with the slip-dresses, which give an illusion of a pinafore-like silhouette and has an unmistakable and charming schoolgirl vibe, which I guess many men admire,” she says.

Ileana doesn’t mind it if it’s done in a chic way. She adds, “Back in the day, if you had worn something like that, it would have been seen as lingerie but now it’s in. As long as the trend is going on, get away with it and if it’s flattering, why not!”

Why not?

Known for comfort dressing and easy breezy separates, Mubarakan lass Athiya Shetty says, “Yeah, why not? I actually dress according to my mood. So I’ll go in a pair of track-pants and come back wearing a maxi. I have to be comfortable at the airport and if I am not comfortable in it, you’ll see it on my face. I have to be confident in it and feel good in it.”

On the other hand, there are those who don’t seem to warm up to the idea. Businesswoman Roohi Jaikishan, known for her eclectic style of dressing says, “While Priyanka Chopra looked good in a slip dress, I’d never wear one at the airport.”

Don’t judge people at the airport

A section of people feel that this trend of judging individuals at the airport when they want to take a 14 hour flight is downright ridiculous. Stylist Rick Roy opines that this is actors’ personal time and one shouldn’t judge them. “The airport look trend is ridiculous and takes away the little ‘me time’ which the actors have. One should not be judged at the airport as it’s about comfort and not style. Having said that, if you are comfortable in a slip then why not?”

Great alternative to jeans and jacket

Falguni Peacock of the label Falguni and Shane Peacock is all for it. She suggests wearing it for a short flight. “I won’t wear it for a 16-hour flight. But for an hour long flight to Goa, it’s fine. We make a lot of printed slip dresses, which are comfortable and easy. I feel that everyone is so done with the jacket and jeans combo and now people are looking for the ease factor.”

’90s continue to reign

Slip dresses gained prominence on the airport and the red carpet in the minimal ’90s with the likes of Marc Jacobs bringing out drool-worthy versions. Picture Jennifer Aniston’s closet in Friends and you know what we’re talking about. Designer Aniket Satam observes that in recent times, the whole slip dress has grown really strong. “Layering with a T-shirt like Deepika has done reminds one of Rachel’s Friends look. Slip dress worn as a pinafore is a good idea as you’re comfortable during your travel. PeeCee’s denim layering is a smart idea to beat the air conditioning on the flight.”

Stylist Allia Al Rufai says, “I’d probably wear the slip dress like this with a T-shirt inside and a shorter version with my sneakers and a big bag. The long length would be too restrictive for me unless the silhouette is flowy.  I’m always late and running to make it for a flight!”
