Singer Cheryl Cole sure did make heads turn at this year’s Cannes with her luscious red feather trail, sending the paparazzi into a tizzy. Her nude and red gown wowed fashionistas and critics alike. Cole however was not the only one to be spotted in feathers; many others stepped out to make a chic statement. While back home, feathers have been used sparingly on garments and lavishly on accessories; they have always been an international runway favourite. You want to be the cynosure of all eyes? Wear feathers! The mantra is now a motto among fashionistas in India too. You notice feathers on earrings, neckpieces, bags and shoes in high street fashion here.

Designer Gayatri Khanna, who works with feathers for a lot of international designers, says, “Ramps in Milan, Paris etc do it all the time. Feathers are considered chic — a classic embellishment. It’s something to make a statement with and it’s definitely red carpet kind of embellishment.”

Fashion designer Archana Kochhar, however, feels that feathers should be used carefully because a little bit extra can make it OTT. “Animal prints and feathers keep coming back in style. Feathers look lovely if you make a corsage on one side of your dress. I personally like to use feathers in combination with semi-precious stones, crystals and other fabric. I think only when they’re used along with these that feathers look really exotic,” she asserts.

Faux feathers in accessories are now a common sight on fashion streets in Mumbai. Designer Rimi Nayak agrees that feathers are being used a lot in accessories like earrings and neckpieces. “Simple charms hanging along with feathers look really nice. But use them in tiny amounts on garments. It’s not practical to use them on clothes in India. You could, at the most, accentuate the shoulders maybe with feathers,” she advises.
