Up up up — seems to be the hem mantra this spring summer. From Saint Laurent’s gravity-defying versions with fur accents to Balmain’s full beaded femme fatale-ish offerings — the mini dress is enjoying the spotlight on the runways and the red carpet. Designer Rina Dhaka, a fan of the mini silhouette, says, “I prefer the A line version in black and gold. I used to wear Azzedine Alaia skirts and now I am warming up to Balmain’s edgy and youthful take on it. During the ‘60s when it was invented and made by popular by the iconic Twiggy to its modern-day variations, it looks fabulous on all age-groups.”

One couldn’t help but agree with that. Check model Amber Valletta’s Insta feed and you’ll know what we’re talking about.

“This season I’d wear it with a loose-fitting shirt,” adds Dhaka, who has toyed with it in knit fabric and sprinkled gold flowers on it.

Jewellery designer and girl-about-town Queenie Singh had shared in an interview with this writer, “When you slip into a mini, make sure it looks sexy, not vulgar. What’s imperative is the way you carry it off. You have to be in excellent shape and your legs should be perfectly toned. It makes you feel good. The most important thing is that it helps you keep your body in check.”
