"Working with artists is always memorable, each interaction is special and most certainly leaves an impact on you," says Hena Kapadia, Gallery Director, TARQ.

Four months ago, TARQ her baby opened in the artisanal Colaba and she has big plans for the gallery up her sleeves.

"Tarq means debate or a dialogue. It's a space where we encourage a dialogue which encourages growth. I strongly feel that art should engage you and make you feel a certain way," she explains.

She pursued her Master's from the University of Glasgow in collaboration with Christie's Education in London and her global education has helped her chart her career trajectory.

The young gallerist believes in trusting her instincts. "As a gallerist, understanding the way your space works, as well as which artists fit into your gallery programme are vital aspects of your creative expression. Meeting artists, travelling and research are tools to help achieve the vision of the gallery as a space for learning about, viewing and interacting with art," she shares.

Global exposure
"The Artworld Practice is not just academic but gives you hands-on practical knowledge of how to do things. It gives you a practical insight into the art world. I spent time with art collectors, art consultants and it was a great exposure," she recalls.

The idea behind the gallery
"The idea of starting a gallery was there at the back of mind for almost six years. I was looking for the right place which was a challenge in Mumbai. It's a four-month old gallery and I have to admit that everyday has been a challenge. I must say each challenge has been rewarding because I have learnt something," says she.

Key learnings
"I have learnt to be self-confident because that makes it people around you to work more happily. I have learnt from mistake and try not to repeat them."

Influx of digital art
"Paintings will always have their space. I find digital art very relatable and the number of people appreciating digital art is growing. Indian art market is definitely maturing. Even if I am hosting an exhibition of photographs, I explain the process of taking the images to my visitors. We encourage conversation and love to answer people's questions."

One's keen to ask her whose work she admires.

"It's difficult to choose who's my fav. One appreciates everyone and finds value in each artist. Observing art helps you grow. Whenever I am in the city, I try and make it to every opening and when I am travelling abroad, I ensure I visit museum exhibits," she quips.

Work life balance
"I am lucky to have an understanding family whose support has been rock solid. It's tough to maintain a work life balance but I am lucky to have a supportive family," she says.

Integral attributes of a gallerist
"You have to be very organised, detail-oriented and meticulous. Besides the understanding of the arts, you need organisational skills. You need to be aware of art and work it for your space."

Collecting art
"I do, in my own small way. I have several prints (both digital and etchings) in my collection, which appeal to me because of the intricate process it requires to create a print."
