Turbans in India have always been synonymous with desi weddings. The recently-unveiled poster of Veere Di Wedding being a case in point which features Sonam Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan along with their entourage of bridesmaids sporting vibrant safas.
Recently, Rekha stepped out in a statement headgear driving paps into a delirium of sorts. No wonder that the classic Indian headgear has become a talking point of late thanks to the likes of Gucci, Pucci, Delpozo, Marc Jacobs, and Versace reinterpreting it in a tie-up towel format, with a bow detailing. The international spin to it brings to mind a modern-day, out-of-shower Marie Antoinette or a fun-loving fashionista, who’s soaking in the holiday in the Saint Tropez sun post her swim in the pool.
The December issue of British Vogue features model and activist Adwoa Aboah sporting a vibrant turban. Our very own Sonam had sported one matching her kaftan as she explored the French Riviera during Cannes film fest earlier this year. If one takes a look at the fashion history, from Cleopatra to the likes of Lana Turner (in the 1941 film Zeigfeld Girl) to the iconic Bianca Jagger at the London Palladium, turbans have always added a hint of mystery and allure to every look. While Gucci’s version exudes an unmistakable disco vibe, Missoni’s zig-zag variations will amp up just about any ensemble under the sun.
ONLY FOR THE STYLE PROS
A turban is a head-turning accessory and can accentuate any ensemble but only the style-savvy and confident should go for it. Azmina Rahimtoola, fashion buyer and store owner, Atosa, feels that this trend isn’t for everyone. “Young fashion enthusiasts should definitely have fun with this accessory. It also works well for a resort or a destination wedding as it’s a great alternative to the maang tika,” she says. Azmina, who recently went on a cruise, spotted a lot of girls sporting turbans that were made from Hermes and Gucci scarves. “A scarf turned into a turban is a cool headgear. It’s a versatile accessory that works for both Indian and Western outings. However, do it with caution, as it could even go drastically wrong,” she adds.
A REFRESHING RESORT TREND
The essential had its roots in the Middle East where it was a traditional gear but its au courant avatar makes it a resort outing companion. Designer Rajat Tangri shares that a lot of his clients like to match their organza breezy dresses in floral prints with turbans.
“Recently, I attended one of my closest friends’ wedding who had matched her fully-embroidered zardozi jacket with her headpiece,” he observes.
ADDS DRAMA
Designer Neeta Lulla has been sporting turbans over the last few years. Her daughter Nishka shares, “My mom wears turbans every day. It adds a bit of drama to every outfit. Just team it, maybe over a pair of jeans or a tank top. It’s easy to style as well as practical. Turbans with bow detailing give a cutesy look.”
