Who says you can’t wear jewels on your pout? With crystal lip art, now you can. Created by New York-based make-up artist Johanna, the technique has now become a craze on social media.

Lips a massive trendsetter

Virginia Holmes, co-owner and co-founder Fat Mu make-up academy, says artists all over the world are constantly trying to reinvent their styles and traditional ways of make-up application. “When you sum up 2016, it does look like lips are a massive trendsetter this year. Glitter lips by Pat McGrath; in one of her looks designed for fashion weeks, became extremely popular and maybe the crystal lips was derived from there. We as artists are constantly looking for inspiration. And these geode lips have caught the imagination of many around the world. Being able to carry such an intricate artwork in real life would be a tough job. Having said that it’s not impossible, there are a lot of make-up enthusiasts who can pull this off,” she says.

Matte is the way to go

Clint Fernandes, make-up expert says, “This is a very glamorous look and can be teamed with buffed glitter nails as seen on Kylie Jenner and Ariana Grande. I had created this look about eight to 10 years ago for a fashion show. If you use a liquid lipstick, the stones will easily slide off. Ideally one should use a matte non-transferable lip colour and then stick on Swarovski crystals with glue. Finish off with a transparent gloss. Avoid doing a full crystal lip. Instead, apply the stones in a small V or heart shape on the pout. Always keep cotton buds and medical tape at hand to remove glitter or stones without ruining the entire look. It’s not a very practical look because if you try to eat, drink or even speak, the glitter goes into the crevices of your mouth and starts to fall all over.”

Hard to replicate

Crystal lips basically refer to pouts adorned with tiny semi-precious gemstones. Make-up artists are creating stunning lip art inspired by these stones, explains Pooja Goel, Khoobsurat Salon and Spa. “Though a crystal lip is quite difficult to try at home, one should begin by lining their lips with a metallic lipstick, filling in the pout using a lipstick, and finally placing the small stones and crystals for the 3D effect. One can use eyelash glue to help keep the crystals in place,” she says.
