Make-up looks are going 3D! If beauty bloggers on Instagram are anything to go by as well as runway shows of Manish Arora and Jonathan Simkhai Fall 2017, the studded look is in. Make-up artists are incorporating pearls and studs to make a beauty statement. Spikes around the lash line add an edgy effect, while pearls can be used as tear drops or to add a luminous glow to the cheeks.

Instagram-centric trend

Renuka Pillai, celebrity make-up artist, Avon India, says the studded eyes and lips is a badass look and has become a regular on catwalks. “It adds a lot of character to the person. This make-up trend is taking over Instagram. One can adapt it to regular wear by making it very minimal and using less studs and crystals,” she explains. Keeping the studs in place can be difficult though. “These should be carefully applied individually using a special tool and gently pressed in with the roll of a brush handle. One could also stick on crystals using eyelash glue which is skin-friendly and long lasting. Be careful while placing the studs along the lash line and lips as these are the delicate parts of the face. Pay real close attention to detailing since that will add to the overall look,” Renuka adds.

Play up a smokey eye

“Pearl studs work well with the bridal look. They create an impact. For someone trying this look for the first time, I would suggest to put studs on the inner corner of the eye. Another option is to place some crystals at the end of a winged liner look. Of course, then there’s always the alternative to place them like bindis on the forehead. These look good with glamorous make-up. Play up a silver smokey eye with metallic studs,” suggests Clint Fernandes, make-up expert. And it’s not just temporary spikes, crystals and pearls that are gaining popularity, but in fact many are happy to go the permanent stud fixture route. Clint says he has seen diamond studs around the eyes, lips and even neck.

Balance it out

The studded make-up trend works well for fashion shows, opines Kapil Bhalla, make-up expert. He suggests trying this out at a night club. It also works for the festive season. “One can create a tear drop flick around the eye. It’s quite a simple trend to recreate but one needs to balance it out. Studs look great as accessories with glitter eyes or a smokey look or a dark mouth. I’d advise women in the age group of 15 to 25 to try this out,” adds Kapil.
