The trend of adapting books to weave magic on the big screen is not a new one. From Harry Potter to the Lord of the Rings, literary classics have helped moviemakers strike gold at the box office. So, it's hardly surprising that the book to movie formula continues this year. Even more reason to catch up on your reading before these works hit the big screen. Here's a list of seven literary works that will hit the screens this year. Read on to find out more.

The Giver
This American children's novel has had a great influence in the formative years of many readers who are anxious about how Lois Lowry's nove being adapting for movie audiences. The book looks at the life of a young man living in a seemingly Ethiopian world. The movie stars actors like Meryl Streep and Jeff Bridges, and is expected to hit the screens on August 15.

Gone Girl
If you enjoy suspense and thrillers, this mysterious tale of a husband's quest to find his missing wife will appeal to you. The film is an adaptation of Gillian Flynn's dark bestseller. The star cast includes Rosamund Pike, Ben Affleck and Neil Patrick Harris. Watch out for Gone Girl on October 3.

Wild
The film chronicles a woman's 1,100-mile solo hike, a decision that came about after a difficult phase in her life- the dissolution of her marriage and the death of her mother. Reese Witherspoon stars in the movie adaptation of Cheryl Strayed's memoir, which hits the screens on December 5.

Inherent Vice
Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice is an adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's 1970-set stoner-noir thriller. The comedy crime drama has an interesting list of actors which include Joaquin Phoenix, Josh Brolin, Owen Wilson, Reese Witherspoon and Benicio Del Toro. Catch it on December 12.

Serena
Serena is based on a novel by Ron Rash that goes by the same name. It follows the life of newlyweds George (Bradley Cooper) and Serena (Jennifer Lawrence) who come together again in this Depression-era film as a timber magnate and his wife. Watch out for it this year.

Macbeth
William Shakespeare's works continue to inspire filmmakers. The latest attempt is to retell Macbeth. A classic tale of greed and ambition with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the cast. It's expected to hit the screens in 2014.

Suite Francaise
War time romances can be moving and tragic at times. Suite Francaise is just that, a film based on a novel that looks at the romance between a German soldier in Nazi-occupied France and a French woman. The novel was authored by Irène Némirovsky, and published 60 years ago. It stars Michelle Williams and Matthias Schoenaerts and is expected to come out in 2014.
