It could be a case of mothers being pressed for time, but more women are utilising baby care products in their beauty regime. A few years back, it was a popular diaper rash cream for babies, that gained popularity with women for its soothing and moisturising properties.

Baby oil has long been used by models and others alike to remove stubborn make-up from the skin. Even baby wipes are a handy item to carry when you don’t have time to wash your face. A New York-based dermatologist Dr Ellen Marmur says that baby creams, shampoos, and conditioners are huge with patients who have “skin brutalised by overtreatment.” She feels these can help clear out the old, damaged collagen, fill in wrinkles, and preserve elasticity.

Choose the right products
Dr Meenakshi Agarwal, plastic and cosmetic surgeon, Face and Figure says the main advantage of such products is the lack of harsh chemicals. “The skin of a baby is very sensitive, hence these skincare products are good in a way.

A diaper cream can act as an emollient to soothe the skin from rashes or burns. However, a medicated cream must also be used,” she says, adding, “Cosmetics for adults, are still better. Those from good brands, are usually tested so that they don’t cause reactions to the skin.”

Gentler on the skin
Child care products are tested in such a way that they have lesser tendencies to develop allergies says Nikos Narkissos, beauty expert. “They are free from paraben and derivatives which are widely used in cosmetics made for adults, making them milder and gentler on skin.

Cosmetics for adults tend to use parabens and its derivatives. Parabens can cause skin irritation leading to contact dermatitis and rosacea in individuals with paraben allergies. There are findings that shows parabens partially mimic estrogen, a hormone known to play a role in the development of breast cancers. Hence, baby products could be a safer practice.”
