Glossy, blemish-free skin with a natural glow to it, is every woman’s desire. glass skin, which is the latest beauty term from Korea, is just that. The goal is to achieve clear, smooth skin that almost reflects similar to glass. It’s considered a sign of youthfulness and can be recreated by first sloughing away all the dead skin cells for a smooth base and then hydrating with multiple layers of products till the skin is plump and perfect.

Use multiple products

Dr Batul Patel, Dermatologist, The Bombay Skin Clinic explains that the glass skin concept refers to  translucent, clear, glossy skin that looks like glass, free from all imperfections. “The first step is to carefully buff the skin which means gentle exfoliation with an invigorating scrub to remove the dead skin. This is then followed by a thick moisturiser with hyaluronic acid or vitamin C. The best way to achieve good results is in the layering of products, diligently and with dedication. Multiple product layering is the newest trend and it follows a principle of exfoliation of the dead skin layer allowing better absorption of the active ingredients, which could be a vitamin C, retinol anti-aging molecule, hyaluronic acid or AHA molecule. This is then followed by a moisturiser and a sunscreen. The multiple layering of the skin allows better skin health, skin renewal and fast absorption of the molecule into the deeper layers of the skin,” says she.

Word of caution

This trend should be followed with caution, advises Dr Madhuri Agarwal, founder and medical director of Yavana Aesthetics Clinic. She says, “In order to achieve the look, one needs to regularly work towards it. I would not recommend daily exfoliation as it can end up irritating and making the skin more sensitive, when not done with the correct product or in the appropriate method. Exfoliation twice a week is sufficient to clear up the dead skin cells. In case of humid weather like in Mumbai, frequent layering of moisturisers can block the skin and lead to breakouts.”

Dr Soma Sarkar, Medical Director and Dermatologist, Skin Inn further agrees with this. She says to recreate this kind of result in India is difficult as we are a tropical country and have hot and humid weather. But we can work on our skin to get a similar kind of sheen. “The best way to achieve this, is to be very disciplined with your skin care routine on a daily basis. These results cannot be achieved in one day or overnight. It’s best to use good, dermatologist recommended products, which are effective and result oriented,” adds Dr Soma.

Keep hydrated

A glow of this magnitude starts from within, and you need products that will deliver actives deeper, explains Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar, MD Skin, Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Trasi’s Clinic and La Piel. “The key trick to achieving glass skin is layering your skin care products. Exfoliation is  key, and helps to remove excess dirt, oil, impurities and dead skin cells that cause that familiar rough and porous texture. Next up is the hydrating serum, which helps to lock in moisture and keep the skin glowing. Make sure you top up throughout the day with a face mist to keep the hydration locked into your skin,” she adds.
