My Sunny Balcony’s Shailesh Deshpande clears doubts and reasons why you must think of making place for potted plants in your apartment, after all.

1. Most nurseries in town are good options to shop for plants without having to spend a fortune. Some of the nurseries are better at providing knowledge than others. Lalbagh is the most famous though different nurseries around town specialise in specific types of plants.

2. Some easy-maintenance plants are Zamia, a fully indoor plant that needs watering only once a week; Anthuriums, a great semi-shade plants that require water on alternate days and Parlor Palms, another shade-loving plant that requires minimum maintenance. Syngoniums, chlorophytums and moneyplants are sturdy shade tolerant fillers that help any place look full and green.

3. Mint, coriander, lemon grass and celery are the easiest to grow herbs.

4. A young couple setting up their home must make space for greens because a green space creates a nice peaceful corner in your house that allows you to connect with nature. Done up creatively, it can be the most unique space in your house.

5. Sunlight conditions and the ability to water on a regular basis are the conditions one must always consider while choosing plants. Beyond that, accessories can be chosen based on style, budget and how well they can integrate with the theme one has in mind. One must also take into consideration the ‘use’ of the garden — is it just aesthetics, growing vegetables and herbs, providing shaded areas in the house etc.

6. One can shop at most of the big lifestyle stores for home accessories. There are bargains to be found in bazaars organised to highlight the local expertise and handicrafts. A very good place to look for garden accessories would be a store like MySunnyBalcony where accessories have been designed keeping various garden themes in mind. For general home accessories, FabIndia is a good place.

7. A nice watering can, a small shovel, gloves and some generic plant nutrients are good starter accessories for any wannabe gardener.  The rest of the accessories — pot holders, water features etc will depend on the theme of the garden. The most important accessories that cannot be bought are an interest to get your hands dirty, and patience to allow for the plants to grow.

8. If someone wanted an instant makeover for their home, my suggestion would be to call a professional outfit. Having experience in developing theme gardens for spaces small and big, they would be able to provide one the perfect makeover.

9. My favourite space in my home is the balcony where I have box planters with some flowering and green plants that make my morning and evening tea a pleasurable ritual.

10.
A mistake people do while growing plants is over-watering the plants.
