In this era of item numbers, if you are among those who yearn for the unhurried aesthetics of ballroom dancing, a new art exhibition which freezes the beauty of the dance form coming to Mumbai might just be the thing for you.
The brainchild of the self-taught artist Parul Shah, the exhibition, with its myriad hues and figurative sketches of dancing couples manages to strike an immediate chord with its unhurried grace, warmth and unspoken intimacy.
Explaining how she came to use one art form to depict another, Parul says, “Ballroom dance is the finest representation of the interplay of various pleasant emotions. It showcases grace, happiness and a subtle energy between a couple which allows them to convey without words what they feel for each other. The gentleness of the man leading his woman, who he assures of being beside all the time, makes it really special. With my paintings, I’ve aimed to capture this beauty of eternal love.”
Without ever receiving formal training, this recipient of several awards and recognitions started painting when she was 30. Although she began by replicating the works of other artists, she soon began producing her own original work.
“I would spend at least six to seven hours practicing and reading various books on art. I became a part of the Arts Society of Mumbai and would just go there and observe other artists’ work. Had it not been for my supportive husband and son, I wouldn’t have been able to live my dream.”
Over her 12-year journey in the world of art, Parul’s work — much of it figurative painting — finds its place in many Indian as well as international homes.
