Dr M Balmuralikrishna to receive Lifetime achievement award

Padma Bhushan Vidushi Smt Girija Devi will be presenting the lifetime achievement award to Padma Vibhushan and world renowned Carnatic vocalist Dr M Balmuralikrishna amongst many music lovers today at the Nehru Centre. The event is organised by Ugam, a charitable trust.

Dr M Balmuralikrishna is counted as one of India’s legendary classical singers. He has sung not only in Telugu, his native language, but also in many others sharing screen and stage presence with artists like late Pt Bhimsen Joshi in Mile Sur Mera Tumhara in 1988 among other jugalbandis on stage.

 The musical evening that’s open to all will also see Patiala gharana vocalist Pt Ajoy Chakrabarty and santoor player Rahul Sharma enthrall the audience. “This award has been instituted in the memory of Pt Uma Dutt Sharma as a mark of respect. Pt Uma, a vocalist and a learned guru is said to be responsible for bringing the Kashmiri santoor to Indian classical music by imparting the training to his son Pt Shivkumar Sharma,’’ says Padam Sacheti of Ugam.
