The New Year is the time to de-clutter your homes and offices and opt for an of-the-moment and refreshing colour palette. 2017 seems to be big on whispering monochromes, natural materials and the year is likely to see matt making its presence felt like never before. After Hrs speaks to some design and decor mavens on what’ll be big in 2017...

Say hello to monochromes, mood lighting

Sameer Balvally of Studio Osmosis highlights the changes to expect in 2017. He predicts a lot of monochromatic colour palettes with functional highlights. “The focus will be on using different materials and textures, but of the same colour subtly tickling the senses,” he says.

A few trends will be carried forward, he adds, “Natural materials will continue to be a popular choice. The key will be in using the same materials more creatively and using technology to further highlight their natural beauty. A good example would be laser cut marble with modern patterns.” He emphasises that lighting will see a focal shift in 2017. “Ceilings will do more talking, while the floors can rest in peace with cluster lighting being replaced with sleeker and innovative in ceiling lights, one or two big lights that not just illuminate the space but also make a statement,” he adds. Picture romantic, mood lighting with highlighters as opposed to evenly distributed lights.

Gloss is out, matte is in

Shilpa Balvally of Studio Osmosis feels that offices are turning into boutique spaces through the use of material and concepts by designers experimenting with natural materials and finishes. She adds, “Gloss is out and matte is in. Be it metal, stone or paint. Add to that a touch of green, be it through a vertical garden or a hanging planter light and you are sorted.”

Grey is the new black

Interior designer Danish Fakih observes that grey is the new black. 2017 will also see furnishings making their presence felt in bright contrasts. “Cement tiles are trending. Mild steel furniture. Eccentric artwork and light fittings are en vogue,” says he.

Declutter design

Ajay Hemmady of NA DESIGNS observes that the focus will be on de-cluttering the homes and setting tones and features that are easy on the eye and to the senses. “Simplistic and healthy living is the mantra of 2017. The emphasis will be on clean lines with highlights on walls and surfaces with Indian tones,” he says. There will be a comeback of sorts to the refined Indian way of design and materials that add to the charm.

Nakul Vengsarkar of NA DESIGNS says, “Aesthetically pleasing herbs instead of regular indoor plants, and artwork from our local masters makes for a complete designer interior.” All in all there’s a definite comeback to handwork — be it murals or the accessories. The trend will bring into focus a minimalist line of design with a vernacular flavour of the Indian sub-context.
