Scroll down your Insta feed and you’re likely to spot chokers all over — from actresses to supermodels to North West. From the traditional metallic styles to the slim scarves tied around the neck. Designers across the board have reinterpreted them in their own handwriting — from velvet, metal, rhinestone to leather variety. The likes of Sonam Kapoor, Rihanna, Behati Prinsloo and Lily-Rose Depp have fallen for the choker lust hook, line and sinker.

Catbird’s ‘Sweet Nothing’ choker has been worn by the likes of Kate Bosworth, Elisabeth Olsen, and Rashida Jones.

Thanks to Game of Thrones

Jewellery designer Mrinalini Chandra, who’s toyed with chokers in most of her collections in the past says, “Fashion is cyclical. Bondage inspired — chokers, hand harnesses and body chains have made their presence felt in recent times. These elements keep coming back from the past, sometimes, it’s taken as it is and other times, it’s reinterpreted. Neck bands and tattoo necklaces have been big thanks to shows like Game Of Thrones. Precious jewellery brands like Chopard did chokers for Cannes and semi-precious brands reinterpreted them in simpler way. I’d love to see their evolution further.”

Punk up

Designer Suhani Pittie says, “It’s the easiest way to punk up and lend a rock star look to the simplest of dressing. In its ideology, it can be couture and detailed but the vibe is always street style and very importantly, since it does not come with issues of length, it can practically work with anything you are wearing. Also, amazingly it could be a DIY product. Take a ribbon and tie it around your neck and there you have it!”
She adds, “I don’t think the choker has ever been out. It’s been especially such a fixture in Indian jewellery. And I’m not a follower of trends so I don’t think it’s gonna go out or stay for long. It is what it is.”
Designer Pernia Qureshi seconds that. “I’m obsessed with the neck choker. It’s chic and sexy and goes with everything — be it a dress or a t-shirt and jeans pairing,” says she.

Been an overkill

Stylist Allia Al Rufai says, “I think the choker trend has been a bit of an overkill, however, I don’t see it dying out soon. It’s here to stay. Rosie Huntington Whiteley was the first to sport a scarf neck choker. It’ll be interesting to see how designers reinterpret the scarf choker for Spring Summer 17.”

For the young and the restless

Stylist Ekta Rajani says, “Last season too, the chokers made their presence felt — seen on the runways and the red carpets. Our Grazia cover girl Aditi Rao Hydari wears it this month. Trends like this are great influencers for the young and the restless who are looking to experiment. However, I’m not sure if it’ll emerge bigger like the sneakers trend.”

Try it only if it suits your style

Stylist Divyak D’Souza says, “I’m not a fan of blindly aping trends from the runway. ‘Trend’ in itself is a bad word. Opt for grunge, ghetto aesthetic if it complements your style.”
