Remember Captain Planet and the Planeteers urging you to care for the globe? Well, the message seems to now resonate with millions today, on the 42nd Earth Day, as people across the globe are hooting for greener practices, sustainable living and adapting eco-friendly policies. And needless to say our own city, Mumbai is at par too with its celebrations today.

Hotel Hyatt Regency Mumbai is giving away coffee bean extracts as ground coffee beans are a vertical source of nutrition for plants. Says Aseem Kapoor, General Manager of the hotel, “The ground coffee bean extracts are packaged in small jute bags and shared with guests to care for their office and indoor plants. These beans provide nitrogen, potassium and other essential nutrients conducive for indoor fauna. Also earthworms  and plants fed on these extracts grow faster.”

Eco-friendly stores like Eco Corner and egiftingideas.com (online portal) have special products like eco paintings, cards, organic cottons for sale, and also swear by the principle of re-processing, recycling and reusing.  “This is a celebration to celebrate Earth and the very existence of all living beings. Hence we’re promoting all kinds of organic products on this day,” says Urvashi, co-founder of the Eco store. Designer label Ayesha too has a special green collection to offer. “We’ve got a whole range of funky wooden beaded neckpieces, bracelets, and the colourful threaded wooden bangles to choose from… There’s a 25 per cent discount on any of these earth day collection products,” says a spokesperson.

Even wine brand Sula has tapped into a collection of sustainable practices, transforming the Nasik vineyards into a sustainable winery. E commerce portal Snapdeal.com is running an eco-friendly where one can plant a tree for Rs 5. “We have partnered with an NGO, Grow Trees, that works on  issues like offsetting carbon emissions, improving wildlife habitats, and upgrading water catchment areas,” reveals an employee. “the person will have to Rs 5 on the portal and Grow-Trees will plant a tree in the areas of Tegra, Karech, Thadi Beri and Dhimdi in Udaipur, Rajasthan. The customers, however, will get an e-certificate.”

Those planning to stay at home, can tune into History Channel’s documentary titled Earth Under Water tonight; it highlights the apocalyptic scenario.
