The eviction of encroachments from Gopalpura Bypass on Saturday has brought Jaipur Development Authority’s (JDA) drive near to completion. The task to broaden the road to 160 feet width before Diwali though poses a challenge for the authority as debris of the demolished structures still lying along the roadsides.

“We have cleared all encroachments from the road width at Zone 4 and at Zone 5 few structures remain that on the side lane due to standing stay orders,” said Rahul Jain, SP enforcement at JDA.

The drive commenced from September 20 and was initially scheduled to be completed within a week. However, as the drive advanced the time limit also got extended. As of now debris of the demolished buildings piling on either side of the road continues to remain a challenge in leveling and road laying on the vacated width of the bypass.

“Road laying work has commenced at the bypass near Tonk Road and it will gradually proceed towards Gurjar ki Thadi over next few days,” said a JDA official. “It is though uncertain if the task could be accomplished before Diwali,” he added.

During initial days of the drive the bypass was closed for general public and traffic was diverted to other routes.

These illegal encroachments had popped up upon the road width over past couple of decades much due to negligence of the responsible authorities. Despite increase in traffic these encroachments have continued to grow creating bottlenecks at several places.

It was only after a recent high court order that the authority decided to vacate the area.

However while doing so, the JDA officials also courted controversy. While there were few instances of conflict between the authorities and illegal occupants, at few places those who held legal land deeds were removed forcibly by the authority.
