UK government aims to strengthen ties with Rajasthan

Trade between India and the UK rose by 15 per cent to reach 18 billion pounds during the last fiscal year.

British deputy high commissioner Geoff Wain was in Jaipur on Monday to explore possibilities of a greater collaboration between United Kingdom and Rajasthan in trade and academic processes. During the day,  the UK diplomat held meetings with higher education officers, industries minister and representatives of trade body.

Wain represents the government of UK at Rajasthan and Gujarat, his visit to Jaipur on Monday was focused majorly on ‘academic’ business. “We wish to promote collaboration between academic institutes at UK and Rajasthan.

There are faculty and student training programs being offered at several universities in Gujarat in association with institutes in UK, we intend to bring similar programs to Rajasthan,” Geoff Wain briefed on his visit purpose.

It had been for over an year that International faculty development program are being offered at Gujarat with support of a consortium of universities from UK. As part of the program, student training modules have also been introduced into the state nearly 3 months ago. These initiatives are intended to introduce international training programs based on requirements of trade and industry.

“India is very important in terms of manpower and soon, every fourth working person in the world will be from India. This manpower needs to be trained for best utilisation of their skills,” said another member from the British delegation. The delegation was optimistic regarding advancement in the direction after meeting with the officers from Higher Education department. He also met Industries minister of Rajasthan, Rajpal Singh Shekhawat and members of Confederation of Indian Industries in the evening. The talks paved way for stronger trade ties and mutual investment between Rajasthan and UK.

“There are ample opportunities for collaboration between UK and Rajasthan in industrial sector,” said Rajpal Singh Shekhawat.

Positive Signs

Trade between India and the UK rose by 15 per cent to reach 18 billion pounds during the last fiscal year. The student visas by the UK government to India increased by 27 per cent. The total number of visas issued to Indians increased by 10 per cent. There are 800 Indian companies holding operations in the UK.
