Akshay Kumar starrer Toilet – Ek Prem Katha – has inspired people across the country to construct toilets in their houses. But the inspiration to construct utilities all around Jaipur city came from Swachh Survekshan – a survey conducted to rank cities on urban sanitation. Jaipur Mayor Ashok Lahoti wants Jaipur to be ranked first in this nationwide survey. And he is on a toilet construction spree irrespective of the fact that in some places these utilities meant for public ‘convenience’ are causing big ‘inconvenience’.

As part of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM), Centre is giving funds to Jaipur Municipal Corporation for constructing toilets and urinals at public places. When Swachh Survekshan was launched to rate cities on sanitation, huge weightage was given to availability of public utilities in the city. JMC latched on to this opportunity to score maximum points under this category. Toilets came up thick and fast and overnight several footpaths and road turns were dotted toilets and urinals – all just for the Swachh Survekshan.
