Amid a huge gathering at a small town in southern district of Rajasthan where the tribal population abounds, Congress national president Rahul Gandhi turned the heat on prime minister Narendra Modi accusing him of corruption in the Rafale jet deal. “There is a slogan common these days, Chokidar Chor hai (The watchman has turned a thief), “ Rahul Gandhi took a swipe at the prime minister. He came down heavily on both the BJP governments in the state and at the Centre. Continuing with his attack on the fighter jet deal, he said that the BJP-led government at Centre was unable to face him on the issue. “He (Modi) is unable to look into my eyes when I question him upon the Rafale issue,” Rahul Gandhi said.

The Congress president reminded the gathering of prime minister Narendra Modi’s wish to serve the country as its ‘Chokidar’ (watchman). He repeated the word several times, thereafter, in his speech to remind the workers and the locals who had gathered at the venue, why the watchman is now unreliable as he has started stealing from the house he had chosen to stand guard. He also cornered chief minister Vasundhara Raje deeming her as a partner in businesses with Lalit Modi. He went after PM Narendra Modi on issues of Rafale, demonetization, Vijaya Mallya and Goods and Services Tax. He held the GST as Gabbar Singh Tax after the notorious dacoit portrayed by Amjad Khan in the iconic film Sholay. He assured that Congress when elected to power will integrate five slabs into one, reducing complications and tax burden on small businessmen and traders.

The Congress president was in Rajasthan to bring aggression to the party campaign ahead of assembly elections in state. The campaign had officially commenced nearly a month ago with a road show of Rahul Gandhi in the state capital Jaipur. Congress leaders have since been holding Sankalp Rallies across the state to counter the ongoing Rajasthan Gaurav Yatra by the BJP. The Sagwara rally was one in a series of public meetings. However, the party made it a Maha Sankalp Rally to stress on the importance of Udaipur division. The congress is looking to grab most of the 28 seats in the division which is believed to hold the pulse of the people in state. If past trends are any indication, whenever Udaipur division has swayed in a party’s favour that party goes on to make the government in state.
