As an Indian, it is so usual for us, even in urban India, to see a mother or wife having food, only after her children and husband had finished their meal. It is also common that, while feeding her family, Indian women try to give them best food available and during her endeavour she generally overlook her own diet.

It may be a common phenomenon for almost every Indian household but reasonable enough for the ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) to change its strategy to address the situation of malnutrition in pregnant women and newborns.

In a bid to fight malnutrition, the ministry of WCD planning to be heading towards on-spot feeding of supplementary nutrition to pregnant women as a possible solution.

“In our society, the Indian women are being eulogized for her sacrificial image since ages. Now, she is in a habit to share everything with the whole family. The same is being practiced with supplementary nutrition, which is meant to be consumed by pregnant women and lactating mothers only. Despite of working for so many years to change the behaviour, this attitude remains the same, so we are planning to do it differently,” Suchi Sharma, director, Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) told DNA. Recently, from the last Thursday i.e October 5 in fact, the state government, in order to ensure nutrition for pregnant women, has started a pilot project to give them free of cost supplementary nutrition under the ICDS Scheme at monthly basis, instead of current practice of giving it every week. But problem seems to has more social than economical reasons in its root.

“Poverty is not the main cause for under nourished women in Rajasthan as availability of food is not an issue,” Manoj Jain, Additional Director (Nutrition) at ICDS said. “Food habits in our society mainly, deprived a women off required nutrition. Family members even don’t know about the right food for an expecting mother,” said Jain.
