Vasundhara Raje government has made up its mind to implement six-day week for the government employees. The government is fast moving in this direction. This is a calculated risk vis-a-vis assembly election, as the government is hoping to get public support but the decision may also backfire because government employees are not going to like it.

The first indication of reverting to old system of six-day week has been received during CM’s Ajmer visit. She is said to have taken a confidential report and 42 out of 60 organisations have backed the decision.

Various surveys and reports by the government have propelled the government to end with five-days week, which has not benefited the common man. Most employees didn’t come on time in the morning and left office before 6 pm. Even worse was a holiday preceding weekend or following it. Employees would use this to proceed on long leave thus affecting work.

Although, working hours are less in five-day week, but every attempt to change in last nine years have met with stiff resistance and failed altogether. The five-day week was introduced by CM Vasundhara Raje during her previous tenure ahead of assembly elections in 2008.

It is believed that 7th pay commission’s announcement is being held because the government wanted to implement it with six-day week to pacify employees.

“Five-day week is not benefiting common people. Six-day week can speed up government functioning,” social worker Sumer said.

“Five-day week was implemented during previous government of Vasundhara ji. It was implemented on trial basis. CM got feedback that people’s work has been affected; therefore, six-day week is considered better. As for the employees, they have been working hard and will continue to do so,” said employees leader Mahendra Singh.

Six-day week

  • Working hours : 10 to 5
