When the going gets tough, the tough get going. The axiom that reflects on the mind of a go-getter finds resonance in the working of AICC organisation secretary and former chief minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot.

A wily politician, Gehlot has come to the rescue of Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi at a time when the BJP juggernaut powered by a driven Amit Shah has been savagely cutting through their defences in most assembly elections that have been held so far.

Then, Gujarat happened! The BJP got home eventually in a poll that went down the wire, but Rahul got the accolades for the grit that the Congress has been lacking. The real hero was, however, Gehlot who got the bull by his horns and not only challenged the Modi-Shah duo on their home turf but also changed the narrative of the polls that saw the BJP home by a whisker.

The political roller-coaster in Karnataka after the elections threw up a hung assembly saw the Congress taking the lead in formation of the government giving the BJP a dose of its own medicine. Sources said, Gehlot was brought into picture by the Gandhis to avoid a repeat of Goa and Manipur fiascos where the Congress slipped and let the BJP form the government despite their lead of the opponents.

The Congress was nimble and swift on its feet making JDS headed by former prime minister Deve Gowda an offer so lucrative, he couldn’t refuse. Gehlot has been closely involved in the backroom manoeuvres to play the Chankaya and help Congress retain power in the southern state.

Gehlot landed in the southern state on Monday night, few hours before the counting of votes was to start. On Monday night, he reached Bangalore and met chief minister Siddharamaiah and other party leaders to discuss the formation of government in different scenarios.

BJP despite being the single largest party is away from the magic number of clear majority. The Congress smelled blood and local leaders with Gehlot pushed the envelope on an alliance with JDS. If Congress manages to put a government in place, Gehlot shall be looking north, a little homesick, but as he put it, never really far away!
