Rajasthan: The twists & turns in Reshma’s journey home

The 65-year-old woman who resided on the Gadra Road in Agasadi tehsil of border district Barmer had died on July 7 while she was visiting her kin in Pakistan.

The mortal remains of 65-year-old Reshma who had passed away on foreign soil finally arrive in Barmer.

Seven days after she passed away on foreign soil, the mortal remains of deceased Reshma finally arrived at her native place in Barmer of which she was a resident. The 65-year-old woman who resided on the Gadra Road in Agasadi tehsil of border district Barmer had died on July 7 while she was visiting her kin in Pakistan. 

“She had travelled to Pakistan to meet her daughter and elder sisters who are settled there,” an official of the district administration said. After seven days of inter-government exchanges the request for repatriation has come through, the official said. Reshma had passed away on July 25 reportedly after suffering from some ailment.

The final farewell

The deceased had gone to Pakistan on June 30 with her son Syab khan. She had travelled to the village of Chiapara (Sangad) located in the Mirpur region of Pakistan. She was supposed to return on July 27, but she passed away after briefly suffering from fever while with her kin, sources said. 

The bereaved family members were had requested help from the administration and the government of India to get Reshma’s body back for performing the last rites.

Repatriation plea

Reshma’s second son Jadam had met the district officials. He had also made his case before the local legislator Manvendra Singh to seek his intervention in the matter. 

District Collector Shivprasad Madan Nakate was apprised of the matter and the plea to bring Reshma’s body to India was subsequently taken up. Nakate spoke to officials with the Indian High Commission in Pakistan and New Delhi. Local legislator Manvendra Singh, son of former foreign minister Jaswant Singh took up the matter with the local officials and the ministry of external affairs, officials said.

Sushma Swaraj tweet

Finally, due to the intervention of the minister of external affairs (EAM), Sushma Swaraj, permission was given to bring her body back from Khokrapar via road. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in a tweet had asked Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria to help the family members, after which he replied, “We are getting in touch with the family in this sad case. Will facilitate the repatriation of remains.”

Home at last

The visas for Reshma’s sons were extended, but due to delay in completing the formalities of the passport on Saturday, her dead body could not reach Munabao. Reshma’s body was brought by an ambulance to the Munabao Border. The Pak Rangers handed over her body after all formalities to the BSF officers. Later that Barmer administration handed over the body to the bereaved family.
