There seems to be an uncanny correlation between being a BJP spokesperson and good luck that follows as whosoever holds the post gets rewarded. Mayor Ashok Lahoti is one of those lucky ones who have had enjoyed the ‘red beacon’ status after having served as party state spokesperson. In the last four-year tenure of the state government, four spokespersons have received such elevations. With the spokesperson post exuding so much of ‘power’, every party worker seems to be vying for the coveted post.

When the BJP government came to power in the state, Jyoti Kiran was the state spokesperson and she was elevated to the post of chairman of Rajasthan Finance Commission within few days. When Ashok Parnami became the president of state BJP unit, he appointed Jaipur Rural MP Rajyavardhan Singh and Priyanka Choudhary as the state spokespersons. Within no time, Rajyavardhan became a minister in the union government. Besides, the state government also awarded Priyanka Choudhary with a political appointment and she was made chairperson of Barmer urban body.

There came a phase when the post of BJP state spokesperson remained vacant for a long time and it was in 2015 that the party appointed former Mahila Morcha state president Suman Sharma on the post. But such turned the tide that within ten days Sharma was appointed as the chairperson of Rajya Mahila Aayog leaving the post vacant all over again and BJP was left with only one spokesperson Alka Gurjar.

On December 11, 2016 Parnami announced his new team and elevated Alka Gurjar as the state vice-president while Ashok Lahoti was made the state spokesperson who within three days became the mayor. History suggests that the post of spokesperson acts a springboard for BJP leaders who end up becoming a minister or get hold of some organisational post.

The aforesaid names are just a handful mentions as the list is pretty long and also includes the names of ministers like- social justice and empowerment minister Arun Chaturvedi, medical and health minister Kalicharan Saraf, BJP MLAs Mohanlal Gupta, Bhawani Singh Rajawat. Though Kailash Nath Bhatt could be an exception.
