All parties are promising a ‘Kisan Raj’  to woo farmers ahead of the assembly elections. Most parties, including the BJP and Congress have been promising welfare of the farmers that comprise about 65 per cent of the state population.

As the ruling BJP promises ‘free electricity’ and to double farmers’ income, the opposition Congress has vowed  “Kisan Raj” (rule of farmers). The slogan “Kisan Raj” was also used by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) while inducting Kisan Mahpanchayat leader Rampal Jat.

“If either of BJP or Congress had been serious towards welfare of farmers, the situation of the sector would not have been so difficult for them. This election we wish the community stands united for their rights and we shall have a rule of farmers in the state,” said AAP Rajasthan president Deepak Bajpai. It is not just the parties that attempt to woo the votes, independent MLA from Khinvsar Hanuman Beniwal has been travelling far beyond his constituency holding public meetings and has invoked a farmer rally in the state capital Jaipur on October 29. Beniwal has been urging farmers to vote against BJP and Congress.

Even several farmer leaders have been leading local farmers’ movements across the state. A ‘Khet Bachao, Kisan Bachao’ campaign has been active in the rural pockets of Jaipur, leading the movement is farmers’ leader Nagendra Singh. Came into limelight during from anti-acquisition movement last year, Nagendra has yet not announced a formal political alignment.

“People of all the 36 communities that are engaged in farming are with Congress as it has stood by them since independence. The farmers have suffered a lot under the BJP rule and are now looking at Congress for relief,” says leader of opposition, Rameshwar Dudi.

He said that for Congress “Kisan Raj” will come through welfare schemes and assured return on their produce. Farmer rallies of political parties and individual leaders meanwhile continue to draw huge crowds.
