In its efforts to curb infant mortality rate (IMR), neonatal mortality rate (NMR) and malnutrition in the state, Rajasthan government has included mother’s milk management in the nursing course. Now, nursing students in Rajasthan will undergo mandatory training in mother milk management for 72 hours as it has been included in their practical curriculum.

“The nursing students deployed in labour room, outpatient department (OPD), inpatient department (IPD) and immunisation will help and educate mothers in appropriate breastfeeding practices,” Devendra Agarwal, advisor to the state health department for Aanchal Mothers’ milk bank project said. “These nursing students will be trained at mothers’ milk bank, mothers’ milk clinic and lactation management. This will help curb IMR and other existing child related problems,” he added.

By including the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) practical course in government nursing schools, the nursing students will have to undergo 72 hours training in second and final year during the 3.5 years duration course.

The state has 15 government GNM schools and mother milk management has been included last month. The nursing students will be imparted training on lactation management for three days and counselling and training to mothers for breastfeeding. Students will be coached at breastfeeding clinic and six days in mother milk bank, where nursing students will be trained for flushing out milk and storing it for neonates who could be in need of mother’s milk.

“With nursing students being trained in mother milk management, more manpower will be available, which will help in arresting infant mortality rate and fighting the problem of malnutrition,” Agrawal said.

Currently Rajasthan has 19 human milk banks in 17 district hospitals, including in Beawar (Ajmer) Alwar, Banswara, Baran, Barmer, Bhilwara, Bharatpur, Bundi, Chittorgarh, Churu, Dholpur, Jalore, Karauli, Rajsamand, Sawai Madhopur, Sirohi and Tonk, at Rabindra Nath Tagore Medical College in Udaipur, and at Sawai Man Singh Medical College in Jaipur run by the Norway Government.

By including the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) practical course in government nursing schools, the nursing students enrolled in the institutes will have to undergo 72 hours training in second and final year during the 3.5 years duration course.
