History will come alive at the Chhoti Chaupar metro station, as artifacts from five museums of the state will be displayed at the station art gallery. The artifacts to be displayed will be categorised in four themes based on devotional sculpture and architecture.

Developed in heart of the heritage walled city of Jaipur, the art gallery at the underground metro station will add to its aesthetic value. An old pond that existed at the chaupar is being reconstructed on ground surface of the station by the Amber Development and Management Authority and Department of Archaeology and Museums which is managing the art gallery.

“There are 90 art pieces brought here from five museums across the state while the artifacts recovered during unearthing for the station will also be put on public display,” says a senior officer at department of archaeology.

Many of these artifacts are more than 700 years old and have been selected in accordance to the theme. These include idols and carvings from Hindu and Jain religion. It had been a tremendous task for the archaeology department officials to select and transport these idols to art gallery in less than a month and half.

The underground station is fast pacing for completion while the art gallery is being touched up for inauguration by chief minister on Wednesday. The gallery will be around the dry pond being reconstructed on roof of the underground station.

“We have made efforts to revive the pond in its original shape based on all information we could collect, this would not only add to the heritage and beauty but will also provide the commuters a spot to relax,” says Hridesh Sharma, director ADMA. The pond has been reconstructed using stones recovered from the original structure while Dholpur stone has been used to reconstruct the step wall of the pond.

The pond will not have water but will have a fountain instead and citizens will be allowed to sit an relax along the steps.

Meanwhile, the Jaipur metro has already laid tracks through the tunnel connecting the metro station with Chandpol. Metro operations at the station will though have to wait for few more months for completion of the formalities.

In a mix of heritage with public, the ‘step ponds’ will have a fountain and water carpet while the step walls will remain empty for public movement. It would have tunnel gates to remind of the water channels, however, in the new format these gates will lead to art gallery.

The pond have floor made of stones from the original structure while Gomukh replicas, steps and water pumping facilities remain new additions.
