In upcoming Assembly elections the state election department has set a target to bring 10 lakh Divyang (specially abled) voters to cast their vote which they ‘ignored’ due to physical constraints.

For this the department has kept a theme ‘Sugam Matdan’ in the elections to ensure facilities for such voters. “Currently 10 lakh Divyang live in the state, of which we have registered 5 lakh as voters so far. Our efforts are to register them all so they all can cast votes,” said Chief Electoral Officer Ashwini Bhagat who held a meeting with leaders of recognised political parties at his office on Wednesday.

Nearly 17,000 Divyang had cast votes in previous election which was very poor ratio comparing their strength. Election officers feel this low turnout was due to lack of facilities which in turn deterred the specially abled voters. A need was felt to provide them with facilities to motivate them to use their right of vote.

“I appeal to the political parties to make efforts to include more Divyang in the electoral rolls so their figure may touch lakh  this time,” said Bhagat. A couple of weeks back the election Commissioner Sunil Arora visited Jaipur and held meeting with senior election authorities directing them to formulate a scheme to enroll more specially abled voters in list and help them access polling booths.

Arora directed Bhagat to run a special campaign to create a database of specially abled persons so their enrollment in voters list could be ensured. Also, more facilities should be provided to them to access polling booths.

In compliance of these directions the state election department is in full swing to add such voters in the list which be being complied under ‘Second revision programme presently.

Bhagat informed that final voters list will be released on September 27 in a circular shot to the chief electoral officer (CEO). Moreover, the representatives of political parties discussed with Bhagat about the election preparations and none of them complained about fake voters.
