It’s tweedledum versus tweedledee in Chomu. Living up to Rajasthan’s trend of electing the BJP and Congress every alternate terms, Chomu too has been doing the same.
Sitting BJP MLA Ramlal Sharma and his Congress opponent Bhagwan Sahay Saini have been alternately elected to assembly by the local populace. However, this year the entry of Chuttan Yadav, member Hanuman Beniwal’s Rashtriya Loktantrik Party (RLP) has been giving sleepless nights to both Bhagwan and Ramlal. The newly-formed party has apparently made penetration into vote banks of both the dominant parties and is likely to play a spoiler.
In 2003, Ramlal defeated Bhagwan by a margin of 4292 votes while the latter avenged the defeat in 2008 by winning by just 135 votes. In 2013, Ramlal riding of Modi wave was elected with a record margin. However, what has made this election interesting is the addition of nearly 37,000 first time voters. Although the total electorate consist of Jat, Yadav, Brahman and Saini, the third front candidate has disrupt established social engineering equations for both the dominant political parties.
These castes constitute a considerable percentage of around 2,20,500 voters residing 38 gram panchayats, which include 1,15,000 male, 1,05,000 females. So, only the time will tell whether the residents of Chomu reverse the trend of election an MLA alternately or this time they will rewrite the history.
