The dropping of parachute leaders among the Congress candidates has caused revolt in over 30 seats out of 200 that could disturb polls mathematics of the party which according to surveys have bright chances of returning into the power. The party has released three lists of 199 candidates and many leaders denied tickets are continuing protests at the PCC headquarters while many have resigned already.

Rebels could be a hurdle in Cong’s goal

The state capital has been bastion of BJP. In last assembly election held in 2013, the party could not win even a single seat and all 8 seats of Jaipur city went into the kitty of BJP. This time, the Congress was hoping to repeat the BJP performance. Though leaders who turned rebels after tickets being denied can spoil ‘intentions’ of the party. Two times contestant of assembly election Vikram Singh Shekhawat has decided to contest independent from Vidhyadhar seat where the party has fielded Sitaram Agarwal. Similarly, Suresh Mishra in Sanganer has also registered protest against Pushpendra Bhardwaj and may contest as independent. Jaipur ex-mayor Jyoti Khandelwal has already resigned from the party secretary post and her supporters votes could make Amin Kagzi to register victory here. Supporters of Rajiv Arora, who was seeking ticket from Adarsh Nagar are also angry on denying his candidature. A protest by supporters of Congress’ local leader Girish Pareek was held at the PCC headquarters office against Archana Sharma’s candidate from Malviya Nagar seat.

Veterans who were denied tickets

It was decided by party president Rahul Gandhi that parachute leaders who join the party will have to work for five years to become eligible for tickets. When the lists were out, no set criteria was followed in ticket distribution and even candidature of senior leaders was chopped off. The party strictly followed criteria not to field the candidate who lost elections twice. On this basis, former PCC chief Chandrabhan candidature was denied from Malpura and the party gave the seat to Rashtriya Lok Dal under pre-poll alliance. However, the same criteria was not followed when the party gave the ticket to Niraj Dangi Reodar. He has lost election twice so far. Besides this, the Congress showered affection on BJP turncoats. Over half a dozen leaders who switched to Congress recently got tickets while the leaders who worked on grounds were denied tickets. Dausa MP Harish Meena and Nagaur MLA Habib Ur Rehman, who quit the BJP and joined the Congress 24 hours before the list published, easily got the ticket. Rehman has been repeated from Nagaur seat while Meena has been fielded from Deoli-Uniyara. Interestingly, Namo Narayan Meena, a former minister in UPA-2 and sibling of Harish Meena, was eyeing to contest the seat. It has been learned from the sources that Namo Narayan is unhappy with the development.
