Sixty seven-year-old Pramod Mahajan, who works as a farmer in Pune, had donated his kidney to a army person 18 years ago which saved a life. It was a life changing decision taken for humanitarian cause. After giving one of his kidneys to his friend, he realised that there must be a lot of people like his friend in the entire country, who succumb to premature death due to the unavailability of adequate organs for transplantation to meet the existing demand.

To overcome the misconceptions of the people and to make Indians aware of organ donation, he decided to travel 10,000 km on motorcycle to sensitize people on how a brain dead person can donate his/her organs even after death and save nine lives which makes for a massive contribution to the society.

During the awareness ride,  Mahajan has planned a 100 days journey and has named it ‘Bharat Organ Yatra’, under which he will travel to 18 different states of India and motivate people to come forward for the cause of organ donation.

Mahajan started his journey from Shaniwar Wada in Pune and on November 1 and  reached Jaipur via Ahmedabad, Dungarpur and Udaipur. The members of Mohan Foundation Jaipur Citizen Forum Navjeevan Sanstha of the Rajasthan Government, which is working in the field of organ transplantation and awareness from last 4 years, are organising organ donation awareness activities with Mahajan for the people of Jaipur.

With the members of the organisation, Mahajan organised an organ donation awareness programme at Sanskar School located on Sirsi Road on November 2. During the event, Mahajan shared his experiences with the school students and made them aware about organ donation. On November 3, at 8 am, Mahajan will visit SV Public School, located in Adarsh Nagar and will resume his journey after interacting with the students.

To promote deceased organ donation and transplantation in the state to overcome the organ shortage problem, state Health and Family Welfare department has already evolved a cadaver transplant program.

As per the Rajasthan Deceased Donor Transplant Data of Rajasthan Network for Organ Sharing (RNOS), 29 donors from Rajasthan have donated their vital organs, 96 solid organs and 14 tissues have been transplanted to
109 recipients.
