It takes two to tango, and what a sight it was to see the somber staid former chief minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot let down his hair and join Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi in an inpromptu dance with tribals of Gujarat. They were in Bodeli, Chota Udepur as part of the Navsarjan Yatra. The video was tweeted by Gehlot and went viral on social media.

Gehlot is the typical tight lipped traditional politician who never lets go of his ‘correct’ public persona. Over three decades in politics, he has never been seen to let down his hair or show his lighter. But Tuesday evening was different;  it was a bashful Gehlot who joined the tribal dancers with hesitant steps. The characteristic switch of ingrained habits was effected when none other than Rahul Gandhi, who held Gehlot by the hand and pulled him along as he (Rahul) himself joined the dancers. Gehlot played the traditional tambourine and tried to match steps with the deft Rahul Gandhi; who was light on his feet. The awkwardness was visible, but living up to his nature of a fast learner and adapter Gehlot was quite comfortable within a short while. The video went viral on social media and Gehlot tweeted, “Some amazing moments with Rahul ji during the local tribal dance at Bodeli, Chhota Udepur,” were evidence of his own amazement.

The easy camradiere was obvious between Rahul and Gehlot as they smiled and laughed and even stood close with their arms around each other’s waist. This could spell trouble for PCC chief Sachin Pilot as Gehlot is a shrewd and seasoned politician. He has always been a Sonia loyalist and could never establish the kind of rappot with Rahul that is being seen in Gujarat. In Rajasthan over the last three years, Sachin has been considered as the natural claimant to the chief minister chair, in case Congress wins the next year assembly polls, simply because of his closeness to Rahul Gandhi. But now, this new found friendship turns it into a battle of who will be first among equals.
