A historical conflict on a B-town movie kept parts of western Rajasthan on the tenterhooks on Thursday following the ‘Janta Curfew’, which was organised to protest against the release of Padmaavat.

In many cities and towns, members of the Karni Sena and other organisations supporting the curfew organised marches and raised a demand for a nationwide ban on the movie.

The curfew has been suspended till Friday afternoon owing to Republic Day celebrations.

The organisations will resume their agitation across the country to ensure that the movie is banned.

Meanwhile, during the protest on Thursday, stray instances of violence were reported from a couple of places and roadways bus services between several cities were also suspended. This was owing to traffic jams along the highways. Rajasthan home minister heaved a sigh of relief as the protests were mostly peaceful.

“There were only two minor incidents of violence reported during the day,” said home minister Gulab Chand Kataria while urging the people not to take the law into their hands.

The protests, however, kept the citizens and police on alert, even as the movie was not released in Rajasthan.Keeping in view local sentiments, distributors and cinema halls were not keen on showing the movie in the state.

“We are willing to extend protection to cinema halls and multiplexes if anyone asks for security,”

Kataria assured cinema hall owners. Protests continue to rock the state as many organisations feel that the commercial dramatisation of the queen of Chittorgarh Padmani is an insult to the Rajput society.

The discontent is at its peak in Chittorgarh and Udaipur.
