Nipah Virus: Rajasthan officials put on alert, told to create awareness

Many foreign and domestic tourists visit Raj, making it vulnerable to infection

As the Human Nipah Virus (NiV) has claimed 10 lives in Kerala, Rajasthan, being a tourist favourite state has also come on an alert mode to avoid any possible outbreak of the virus. 

On Wednesday, state health department issued advisory to health officials for early detection and isolation of NiV suspects. It is advised to consider the possibility of NiV infection in persons with suspected symptoms who had travelled to the affected area or had exposure history in past 21 days. 

In the advisory issued to all Joint Directors and district Chief Medical & Health Officers, districts have been instructed to enhance their surveillance for acute encephalitis through Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) and to carefully review any unusual pattern. In the order, clinicians are also advised to consider the possibility of NiV infection in persons presenting with fever and altered seizures or respiratory illness requiring hospitalisation. The doctors are instructed to urgently investigate such cases to rule out the prevalent cases of Acute Ensiphilitis before testing of Nipah Virus Disease. 

“Rajasthan is among the most favourite places in the country along with Kerala. Thousands of foreign and domestic tourists visit both the states and it makes Rajasthan vulnerable with the possibility that someone who got exposure to the virus in Kerala, may come to the state with infection,” Dr VK Mathur, Director, Public Health told DNA. As per official data of state tourism department 4.75 crore tourists came to Rajasthan last year out of which 16.10 lakh were foreign tourists while the remaining 4.59 crore were Indian tourists.
