With the Rajasthan assembly election slated for the year-end, the Congress is in a quandary on who would be chief minister if the party wrests power from the ruling BJP.  This doubt is believed to have been cleared recently when Ashok Gehlot was given prime responsibility at 24, Akbar Road in New Delhi as organisation general secretary and member of the Central Election Committee. This was apparently a strategy to keep Gehlot away from Rajasthan and give a free hand to RPCC chief Sachin Pilot. However, a statement by Gehlot on Thursday morning created ripples in the party.  Gehlot has once again reiterated that he is not away from the people of Rajasthan and those who understand this message are either intelligent or fools.

“Such reports are being circulated by some people deliberately that sometime I am sent to Punjab, Gujarat or Delhi. These are immature persons who have no knowledge of politics. Such persons bring damages to themselves and party. In Rajasthan, we live with affection and maintain a cordial relationship. Be it Punjab, Himachal Pradesh or Haryana, the leaders have made statement against each other but here in the last four years no such statement was made by anyone,” said Gehlot.

The former CM Rajasthan, in a veiled threat, cautioned such elements, telling them not to spread rumors. “Main Thansu Dur Koni. (I am a not away from you). This is a single line message that needs to be understood. An indication is sufficient for the intelligent and those who don’t get it are silly,” said Gehlot. He also alleged that both the Modi and Raje governments are appointing RSS cadres in the ministries who are working as spies. The two governments are appointing people on caste lines, he alleged.Gehlot also sought the resignation of Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje as he felt she failed to maintain law and order during Bharat bandh observed on March 2 and the ensuing violence the next day when Congress leader Bharosi Lal Jatav’s residence was set on fire.

In his short visit to Jaipur, Gehlot met Jatav on Wednesday night and shared his grief. “The attack on Jatav’s residence in Karauli happened in the presence of the Collector-SP. here is no law and order in the state and the CM should come forward and offer her resignation,” said Gehlot, while addressing a press conference at his residence Thursday morning.
