Lokayukta Justice SS Kothari issued notice to principal secretary local self-governance seeking factual report on non-constitution of committees at Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC).

The Lokayukta, taking a suo motto cognizance of the issue has directed that the process for formation of these committees be initiated in a month or the last chairperson to head the committees be handed the responsibility till the new committees are formed.

Various committees of JMC have been suspended since resignation of the committee members last year along with resignation of

Nirmal Nahata from post of mayor. Even as Ashok Lahoti almost immediately got elected on post of mayor, the formation of committees has been delayed for 290 days. Absence of the committees has impacted functioning of various tasks related to public, such as building plan approval and other works of civic development. This grievance was noticed by the Lokayukta’s office which has sought a factual report from the LSG principal secretary by November 6. The powers for implementation of Nagarpalika rules extended to mayor have also come under question as he has been unable to form the committees in stipulated period of 90 days.

The state government was responsible to decide on the issue after the period, it too failed to act for 200 days.  The issue had also been a cause of discontent within the BJP which holds majority at the municipality house. Many of the councillors had repeatedly raised the issues at various levels in the party but were asked to maintain calm on the issue. Meanwhile, confusion also prevails on status of the outgoing committee members.

JMC NEGLECTED

  • At the recent budget session, the state government had decided to add several more committees to the existing tally of committees at JMC. However, none of these had been formed till date. There are 23 such committees including three each for sanitation and electricity.
