The Gurjars started it. Now, the Jats in Rajasthan have taken a leaf out of their book to read out to the government their right to reservation in government jobs.

The Jat community of Bharatpur and Dholpur districts of Rajasthan went on an indefinite protest demanding reservation in the OBC category. Led by Congress leader Vishvendra Singh who also happens to the erstwhile king of Bharatpur, members of the Jat community, on Thursday evening, blocked the Alwar-Mathura rail line at Bahaj village in Deeg area of Bharatpur.

They also blocked the Kumher-Bharatpur road near Kankoli area, while warning that all rail tracks, national and state highways passing through Bharatpur district would be blocked by Thursday night.

The Jats of Bharatpur and Dholpur have been demanding reservation under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) for sometime now. Jats from remaining districts enjoy the benefits of reservation, but have no share in the quota pie in these two districts. The Rajasthan High Court had put an end to their reservation in 2015 and had ordered a survey to check their socio-economic status compared to other dominant castes in the districts. The Rajasthan Government came up with the OBC Commission in 2016 to carry out the survey, which submitted its report on Thursday.

Highly placed sources in the government said that the contents of the report are positive and the Jats should get their dues. The agitating Jats, however, refused to call off their protest or postpone the stir even after the report was in and demanded that it be made public and reservation secured for the community. Till reports last came in some two thousand members of the community took control of the tracks in Bharatpur affecting the schedule of several trains and forcing diversion on others.

Bharatpur district collector NK Gupta and police superintendent of police Anil Tak reached the tracks where the community has occupied the railway tracks and requested them to get off the tracks, but the Jats continued with their sit-in.

The agitation is being led by Deeg MLA and senior Congress party leader Vishwendra Singh and the Jat Arakshan Sangharsh Samiti. The Samiti had earlier announced they would hold a chakka jam (roadblock) in Bharatpur from Friday June 23. But, in a surprise move they advanced their call by a day.

Vishwendra Singh told DNA that the OBC commission may have submitted its report, but that does not serve their purpose. ”Senior and responsible ministers of the Rajasthan government should immediately issue a public statement and make the contents of the report public,” Singh told DNA. The Government should also take action on the report, he said.

Singh’s arch rival and the man he defeated in last assembly polls, Digambar Singh, also came out in support of the community in the two districts. “The Jat community in these two districts deserve reservation. Their socio-economic status should be revealed in the report,” he told DNA.
