Agitation against the abrupt fee-hike in private schools refuse to die down. Several parents demonstrated outside St Anselm's North City School, Niwaru Road, on Wednesday. Parents gathered outside the main school building early morning to show their anger towards alleged fee hike by as much as 50 per cent!

“I have two children - one in class V and other in class IX. Last year, the fee for class IX was Rs 38,960 for one session which has now increased to Rs 56,970, meaning an increase in fee by a whopping 46 per cent. Similarly, there is a difference of 58 per cent in class V,” a parent explained. The school has released a notification stating that the fee has been raised because the institution is increasing the salaries of the teachers according to the recommendations by the seventh pay commission.

The parent further stated that the school claims to increase the fee by 15 per cent every year. This fees was raised by five per cent every year during 2012-2016.“This is no logic to increase the fees by 50 per cent. They have merely increased the salaries by Rs 1,000 or Rs 2,000. On what basis are they increasing the fees by 15 per cent every year? If this goes on, the fees will touch the skies in no time and it will be difficult for us to afford,” another parent added.Further parents stated that there is nothing extraordinary in the facilities being provided by the school.

“There are no parent-teacher meetings except for the ones after the examination. They have not even provided the number of the class teacher, in case my child is unable to attend the school,” a mother of a class-V student said. However, the school has created a Parent-Teacher Association, as required by the law, and it has five parent representatives.

Principal secretary for school education said that There is a provision of filing an appeal before the divisional level School Fee committee in case the parents are aggrieved by the decision taken by the school committee.

The Solution

  • Principal secretary for school education said that  there is a provision of filing an appeal before the divisional level School Fee committee.
  • In case that doesn’t satisfy the issue, they can further appeal to the state-leve committee.
  • The law does not allow profit sharing but every school will have different fees depending upon the kind of facilities they are providing. Hence, it cannot be capped.
