The urban development and housing department has increased the ceiling for bids for the Mukhymantri Jan Awaas Yojna by 10 per cent.

The government has sighted rise in cost of construction material the reason for the increase.

“In consideration of the rise in cost of construction material, a decision has been made after deliberation at appropriate level, to increase the bid ceiling from Rs1,000 per square feet to Rs1,100 per square feet,” said a senior urban development officer.

Under the scheme launched in 2015, affordable housing units have to be developed for economically weaker sections and lower income groups on land provided by housing board and urban bodies. The private builders are invited to bid for the construction under the prescribed ceiling limit.

The government scheme though was facing disinterest on part of private builders and many of the projects were unable to take off in the absence of bidders. Attempts were also made to compensate the builders by offering them relaxations in applicable charges.

Even a recent proposal floated by Rajasthan Housing Board to construct around 4,000 such affordable housing flats was unable to attract the builders.

The recent decision though has come just in time before the Jaipur Development Authority announces over Rs100 crore projects for construction of another 4,000 flats under the scheme.
